What is infrared heat?

Sitting in the conservatory on a bright and clear Autumn day can make us all feel happier and healthier, as well as warm. But why is it this crisp and chilly outdoor air can make us feel so good? The cat knows the answer, she lies in the winter sun underneath a warm brick wall absorbing the suns infrared energy, this stimulates the metabolism and immune system making her feel happy and healthy.

The sun gives off infrared energy, even on cold days, this passes through space and converts to heat energy when absorbed by us, the cat, or other objects. Once warmed all objects have the ability to give off infrared heat energy which will inturn create a more comfortable and warm environment. Infrared is purely a heating effect on objects and people without the need to heat up the air in between.

Infrared energy was discovered as long ago as 1800, when an English astronomer discovered the existence of infrared energy beyond the red end of the visible light spectrum. Wavelengths found in both the near and far infrared area of the spectrum will create the energy required for atoms within an object to start vibrating. Vibrating atoms in an object will cause it to heat up.

Infrared energy firstly creates a healthy warmth on the skin, by stimulating the blood circulation the heat will permeate deeply around the body. People can feel warmer at lower temperatures depending on the intensity of the radiation. Body temperature is maintained by the insulating effect of the surrounding air which will then rise in temperature too. Heat can move around the body by encouraging optimum blood circulation.
